Written somewhere in central North Carolina, at a small festival. It was so hot, and there was an old-time band playing. I think this song adopted its tempo, and maybe a chord change. I was in the middle of a lot of tumult with love, and had found myself in a sort of metaphorical circus, spinning plates and bending over backward to keep my relationship going, but not very consciously; there was a sort of vortex effect. It felt good to sort of get that feeling out and put it into a song. Matthew came up with that awesome drumbeat.
